Twitter is one of the most used social media tools used for news distribution. The proof to that is the DKNY PR girl that became Twitter rising star. According to Manilla Bulletin, she has nearly 380,000 Twitter followers. At the recent Fashion 2.0 Awards, which honors online fashion initiatives, Licht was the night’s big winner, with awards for Best Twitter and Best Blog by a Fashion Brand. Before, that much of her job consisted of what she called “classic PR.” She cranked the news release machine, arranged fashion show seating and handled celebrity dressing. Then, in 2009, she added social media to her portfolio. “It was like the wild, wild, West when we first started,” she said. “Before, the PR strategies were so controlled. Now everything you’ve done before is out the window, because whoever is tweeting, whether you like it or not, is speaking on behalf of the company. Good or bad or different.” Twitter has also introduced Licht to like-minded friends in the industry. We at Adiree think that’s a great example of social media use in PR.

All over NYFW this year we saw people snapping cell phone pictures, shooting short videos, and pinning and tweeting about their experiences. The buzz of social media has grown louder as everyone from industry professionals to street style photographers are using it to spread the latest. Because of YouTube, it has been possible this year to watch many of the top names’ in fashion shows live from one’s home computer. This new use of technology is changing the way we interact with fashion.

Essentially it is a virtual way of collecting things that inspire or interest you. Founder Ben Silbermann’s wife Divya coined the name “Pinterest” because its users can “pin” the things they find searching through blogs, online shopping, or looking through DIY (Do It Yourself) ideas to a personal pinboard on the site. It allows users to become tastemakers as well as follow others with amazing taste.

Because Pinterest is one of he internet’s most visited sites on a daily basis, The Wall Street Journal sent reporters and photographers to New York Fashion Week to cover the shows via Pinterest. Social media is changing the world of fashion in more ways than one, and The WSJ is taking steps to follow in that direction by being the first to cover any major event through Pinterest. Check out the highlights at http://pinterest.com/wsj/new-york-fashion-week/.

Fashion critics, columnists and promoters, along with Errol Hendrickse (manager of the Ubuntu International Initiative project, which promotes African design abroad) believe that to be cut out of the show last minute by the South African High Commission in London is both disgraceful and embarrassing. The international exposure could’ve been extremely important for these designers at such a prestigious event for both brand recognition and promotion, and created crucial supply chain jobs. Of course we don’t want anyone to rush to assumptions or jump to conclusions about their exclusion from the event, but rather to keep supporting the designers and wish them the best of luck for next year. The opportunities keep coming for the South African designers and we believe South Africa will come back next year stronger and well-prepared for what London and other major cities around the world have in store.

Social Media is becoming a large part of the fashion industry, as it has already taken over the business world. With pages to “like” on Facebook, and Twitter accounts to follow, both sites allow luxury as well as everyday brands to spread their message to their dedicated followers. Luxury brands especially are now leading the way in many aspects of the space provided by social media, and these efforts are not going unrecognized.

As a public relations agency, the Adirée team takes social media very seriously in its efforts to spread our clients’ information, product, and promotions. Because we’re endorsing luxury brands, it is worth taking a closer look at what other fashion brands are doing with social media in our times. This year’s third annual Style Coalition Fashion 2.0 Awards perfectly aligns with Social Media Week as well as (of course) New York Fashion Week. The Award show honors the luxury brands who are “getting it right” in social media. Platforms such as Pinterest and Pose are definitely becoming valuable tools to engage consumers with the brands in new and innovative ways.

As the numerous amounts of strategies and platforms continue to grow to expand consumer knowledge about luxury brands, we speculate that the most successful brands in 2012 will be those who are “able to carefully select the methods, tools, and platforms that align with their brand voice, message, and consumer base” (socialmediaweek.org).

New York Fashion Week 2012 kicked off on Thursday with a powerful message about how the fashion scene within recent years has changed dramatically. Fashion designers and bloggers of color are now legitimate providers of knowledge of what’s in style, and they’re being taken seriously. Taking the world’s temperature, if you will, is exactly what fashion does, by reflecting what’s going on around the globe. As this relates to black women, they are currently feeling free to express themselves not seen before in our times. Another great connection to this occurred at the “annual fashion spectacular” The Heart Truth. Created to bring awareness to the fight against heart disease, the event has annually drawn huge crowds and designers who dress some of the country’s biggest stars. Chaka Khan, 10-time Grammy Award winning Afro-American song-writer popular in the 70s, totally stole our hearts at the event this year.
