Essence Magazine recently highlighted a list of African designers that are inspiring people in the fashio industry and turning heads with their designs in their Black Style Now section. One of the designers chosen was Adirée’s own Darryl Jagga. His collections perfectly show off a woman’s body in all the right ways and highlight their elegance and beauty. Jagga has had much success designing for names such as Calvin Klein and Victor Costa and now has really made a name for himself on his own. African fashion isn’t just for Africans anymore, it is gaining media attention all across the globe and fashionistas of all colors, shapes and sizes are stepping out in their fierce African pieces.
Lola Ogunnaike is a young, beautiful, and very talented journalist who if you did not know her name before you should get to know it. She comes from a Nigerian family, but grew up in Virginia obtaining her undergraduate degree from the University of Virginia, and her Masters in Journalism from NYU. Lola has interviewed a bevvy of celebrities, everyone from Kanye West to Oprah Winfrey, and most recently First Lady Michelle Obama regarding her “Young Africa Project”. Online magazine, Bella Naija, flipped the script with Lola recently and had her sit down to be the one getting interviewed. She gave a lot of information on her life and her job, and even named Korto Momolu as one of her favorite African designers. To read more about Lola Ogunnaike and her interview click here.
A lot of people think Adirée only focuses on fashion, but we are actually much broader than that. While yes we do take a lot of pride in Africa Fashion Week New York, we also focus on areas in business, social media, and beauty. One of our newest clients that I really want all of you to get familiar with is Renarda Joy. Renarda Joy covers all of your beauty needs. The company was even one of the make-up artists responsible for keeping all the amazing models in AFWNY looking fierce. That being said, everyone should go follow them on Twitter, like their Facebook page and stay tuned in for all the exciting beauty news coming from Renarda Joy.
After much careful consideration, Forbes has released their list of the world’s 100 most powerful women. Many factors go into exactly what earns you a spot on this list including company salaries, net worth, news hits, media appearances, and even things like how many followers they have on Twitter and fans on Facebook. Not so surprisingly, the majority of the women that make the cut are political figures, and CEO’s of Fortune 500 Companies. Lady Gaga just fell short of the top 10 coming in at #11. Vogue’s Editor-in-Chief, Anna Wintour, made the cut at #69 and designer and CEO Diane von Furstenburg made the list at #91. I included the top 10 women on the list below, but if you’d like to take a look at the complete list you can find it here.

Web Design is an extremely broad creative field, but sometimes people think their only option to make money is creating websites. There are a few other options for you up and coming web designers out there who haven’t gotten your foot fully in the door yet. First, you can start by selling themes. There is some big money going around in selling themes to WordPress for websites. You can create a template for something specific or for a broader site that people can easily use. Another option is to start a blog. If you have the writing talent and ability and you get enough traffic to your site you could make money selling banners and advertisements. This is also a great way to start getting to know some industry leaders. The third option is to sell your products or services. You can start with software, graphics, other web templates, ebooks, published books, anything you can possibly think of there is more than likely a way to make money from it. Stick to what you are good at and play to your strengths and you won’t go wrong.

I don’t know about you, but when I first heard the news that H&M was going to set up an e-commerce site I was thrilled. They have been one of my favorites for a while and an e-commerce site would make it that much easier to snag some great pieces. The launch on its site was unfortunately delayed to Spring 2012, but they are giving us just a taste of what is to come. Starting today H&M is displaying four different looks on the Elle.com site and allowing you to shop for them online. While what you can actually buy is kind of limited, I am still excited about the launch of the full e-commerce site this spring. The looks that are now currently available include Color Blocking, Modern Biker, ‘60s Mod and Menswear Inspired all from H&M’s fall collection. You can check out Elle’s Stylelist of H&M goodies today at Elle.com/HM

Nigerian born, New Yorker at heart, global mindset. Lola Faturoti has been influenced by beauty all around the world. She was born the daughter and granddaughter of tribal chiefs in Ondo, Nigeria and had her first introduction to the fashion world with her grandmother who was a designer of traditional Nigerian clothing. She began to get more of a global perspective on the fashion world through her mother who traveled a lot when Lola was young and brought her back different styles of clothing from all around the world. After studying in London, Faturoti moved to New York City and began working in the Charivari boutique, the president of the company took notice of her keen eye for fashion and creativity. She helped her launch her first collection and after that everyone began to notice. After taking a few years off from fashion, Lola is back and drawing inspiration from all around the globe with last year’s collections being influenced by Mexican artist Frida Kahlo, and this year’s collection being influenced by Japanese culture. This is one designer who has really made a name for herself in the fashion world and is something many young African designers can look up to.

Hurricane Irene had people running to the store to stock up on canned food, water, and other supplies, but one businessperson in Amangansett, NY had another idea in mind. A Hurricane Fashion Sale was held on August 27 as the sky was darkening and the wind was starting to blow just hours before the hurricane approached. Locals and visitors to the Hamptons did not want the impending hurricane to get in the way of their end of the summer fun as they stopped by to pick up some last minute fashion must-haves.
